Ok, I was petting my step dad’s dog, she was happy at first, then suddenely snatched my arm and held on. I pulled it out of her mouth and it was bleeding a lot. Called my dad after I got it bandaged and told him what happened.
My step dad yelled at me for getting bit, then threw the first aid kit at me and told me to clean it up. After he saw me having issues wrapping my wrist one handed, he came over and angrily did it himself. I went upstairs and put pressure on it and tried to get it to stop bleeding. It bled through the gauze and tape we used. I then called my dad and said "What do I do with this?" because he’s a nurse. He said to go to Urgent Care, get it cleaned out and see if stitches were needed. At the very least, I’d most likely need antibiotics to prevent infection.
So my friend picked me up and I went to Urgent Care. I didn’t bother asking my step dad to take me because I knew he wouldn’t and my mom was out of town so she couldn’t. When I got there, the doctor cleaned it and said that it was just barely below the point of needing stitches so he put three seri stips on it and gave me antibiotics because of how deep it was.
I called my mom on the way and left her a voice mail saying where I was headed. She called me back later yelling at me for doing that when my step dad told her it wasn’t bad. He didn’t even look at it at all. Just slapped on some gauze and taped it.
It then continued to bleed for about 3 hours after she bit me and I got the seri strips from the doctor. I got it to stop temporarily, then it started back up again, but not nearly as bad this time.
So anyway, my mom is pissed off that I went to urgent care saying it was a waste of money, she just got a check for about 15 grand yet acts like we’re hurting with money. She then didn’t believe me when I told her EXACTLY what the doctor said. He said that I did need to go in and that it wasn’t just a "little" dog bite. Yes, only one tooth went in, but it went alllll the way in. My mom is mad that I took the advice of my dad and the advice nurse for Providence instead of just ignoring it. This isn’t the first time she’s been mad at me for ignoring an illness/injury. She ignored it when I had a horrible ankle sprain and needed crutches, she ignored it when my face started swelling until I couldn’t talk any more and we discovered I had an infection in the bone, she ignored it when I got sick until my throat swelled almost completely shut, and she attempted to ignore it when I broke my collar bone.
I guess what I’m asking is what do you think about all this? Do you think I should have just stayed home to "wait it out" with this one or was it okay for me to go in and get it checked out. I don’t see why things should wait till you’re infected or horribly sick before getting them taken care of. She takes care of herself quickly, why can’t she do that for her kids too? Any ideas from parents out there as to why this might be? She got mad about "yet another medical bill" when none have been my fault! I had ear infections as a kid all the time, so she had to treat me for those. Have depression, and so I had to be treated for that too. Then there was the broken bones (both collar bones but years apart.) Maybe she’s just tired of doing it, but I can’t control when I get sick or hurt. You would think this would be the sort of thing she’d expect to have to do at some point in the life of her 4 kids, but I don’t know.
I think you did the right thing. A deep puncture is actually a lot worse than a tear, because its far easier to get an infection in the pocket it makes. Every medical condition in the world is easier to treat if identified early so treatment can be started before complications set in. A dog bite can easily get infected. An infection left untreated can lead to loss of the limb, or even death. I agree that this sounds like it verges on abuse. More accurately neglect. I would assume that you are scheduled for follow-up for the bite. Talk to the doctor or nurse about your mom and step-father’s reaction. Talk to your dad about it. You don’t give your age. If you are able to consent to your own treatment without a parent, then you must be 18. If you are, then you can make your own decisions. You can go live with your dad, assuming its ok with him, even if you are not finished with high school. You can look into enrolling in college and living in a dorm. I think you need to be away from your mom and step-dad. That doesn’t mean to break contact with them. I don’t know why your mom might be acting like this. It could be financial…I know 15,000 seems like a lot of money, but things are very expensive and times are tough… they money may have been specific to a purpose. Health care costs quite a lot. It sounds like you have had several injuries and illnesses. Do they have health insurance? There can be stresses between your parents and step-parents. I wouldn’t worry about the why so much, just work on getting your life together so you are not dependent on their decisions.
As I was stepping off a public bus, my ankle rolled off the edge of uneven concrete. My body weight coming down on that ankle made the sprain even worse. I heard pop pop and then severe pain and I knew I did something very bad. I was taken to the emergency room and when I finally got to be seen by a doctor she was very short with me, rude, impatient and not very informative at all. I had a temporary splint that was put on from the ambulance driver which she basically YANKED off. She never examined my ankle. She just told me the x-ray showed I didn’t break my ankle and I can just go home. I tried to get any kind of a explanation from her but she just kept acting like she just wanted to get rid of me. I asked for crutches but she treated me like I was crying over a small scrape. She made me get off the examination table, with no assistance from anyone, and try to stand on it, which I couldn’t because of the pain and I couldn’t straighted my foot out. So she finally begrudgingly let me have the crutches, I went home and waited for my ankle to heal. 2 weeks later my sister convinced me to go to a small family practice nearby. Upon removing the bandage the doctor and his nurse were both shocked at how swollen, bruised and slightly crooked my ankle still was. The doctor was actually shocked that I got that kind of treatment from someone at the other hospital. He suggested a free hospital since I lost both my part time and full time jobs because of the injury and didn’t have any insurance. When I got there I was examined by doctors who were very caring and empathetic to me. They said I should have never been trying to walk on it, and told me about R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) I was never told that from the other ER doctor. I was told I suffered a 3rd degree sprain with possible ligament, tendon damage and a small broken bone. It took months of recovery with compression bandages, casts, constant pain and my ankle is not as flexible as it used to be. These days it’s difficult for me to stand on my ankle for longer than 2 hours. I wind up limping around all day afterwords with a constant dull achy pain radiating from inside the ankle outward. Is it still possible years later to sue that hospital because I feel like I was being denied proper medical treatment which may have also cause further damage to my ankle since it was swollen for 2 additional weeks?
Thanks for the advice all. To answer a couple of you, the 1st ER doc just told me it was a mild sprain and never explained how to take care of it. I really couldn’t do anything on my ankle anyway so I stayed off of it. She never even looked at it and if she did she would have seen it was the size of a large apple and already turning colors.
no, unless you can gather copies of all the reports and records from the time its going to be difficult to prove anything.
The er doctor can and simply will say that at the time she saw you there was no evidence of further or extreme injury. And that you must have either injured it further after the fact or failed to follow the recommendation to follow up with your own doctor if there was no progress within a set amount of time. Thats standard for most ER release directions.
If you had wanted to sue you should have pursued it at the time and when the latter doctors said there had been an issue in your treatment.
I sprained my ankle in January, and got X-ray’s 2 different times, when I sprained it and also last month. Both times each doctor said it was not broken. But yet it still hurts alot. When I walk to much, or on uneven ground, or just move a certain way, I get shooting pains and my toes go numb. It also swells up like there is fluid in there or something. I’m not sure what to do or how to go about treating it. But the last time I seen the doctor all he said was that the ligaments were probably torn and gave me a light pain killer to help with the pain.. Have you ever had this problem and how did you go about with treatments and the such? Thank you everyone in advance!
sprains hurt forever it seems. if you didn’t care for it properly in the beginning then it will take even longer to heal. since sprains are inflamed you should never put heat on them (it makes it worse) never heat on heat always ice. ice every day for preventive measures until you are sure it’s healed. wrap your ankle in ace bandages but not too tight it will cause it to swell even more. try and stay off of the ankle for as long as you can this is a case when you need to baby it. your ankles and feet have to hold the rest of your body up and it can’t get better if it’s doing all that work. take it easy for a week with your ice and bandage. get a lymphatic drainage massage it will also help to relieve the swelling and pain.
sorry to hear about your ankle i hope this info helps
well 2 weeks ago i was playing football for my team and i went over on my ankle and sprained it not knowing at the time, i continued to play and hurt it again( spraining it for the second time ) and i still played on. after the game i took my boot off my ankle was swollen baddlyy,, so i went to the doctors and they said to rest it,, i did.. the swelling never went down,, and 2 days ago i played still with a now minor swollen ankle and feeling no pain when running on it, and yet again i went over on it again and damaged it even more and continued to play,, i come home and its even more swollen.. and now tomorow i have a football game for school to win the league and i dont want to miss it,, and they day after i have another important game for my teamm,, whatt shall i doo!? and how do i treat this ankle the swellign wont go down !
by the way people its not hurting my one bit, but its swollen i can run for ages and i went to the gymm and worked out,, im also 15 i lied about my age if that concerns you **
of course it won’t go down you numpty. you have seriously damaged yourself and keep ignoring the fact. the more you play the worse you make it. when a doctor says rest it he means rest it until it is fully recovered, about 4 weeks not 2 days.if you continue to ignore this advice and play you will end up with a far more serious condition that will take months to heal if it ever heals properly at all.why do you think you know better than the medical practitioner?
I have been looking it up online and it describes all of my symptoms and i dont want the doc to miss it cuz it says its hard to diagnose. It has been reoccuring for a month and i dont want them to say o its just a sprain and send me on my way. I am way to active in sports for this crap. I just wanted treated over with and out of my way.. How do i make sure they dont miss anything????

Additional Details
it happened during soccer when my foot got caught inbetween a bug guys leg and the ball and i kept going with it stuck. this was almost a month ago and i rested but when i went to jump of the ankle it exploded with a sharp pain. it does that now when i try to jump or cut and is in constant discomfort. i can walk just uncomfortably. i havent been to the docs at all yet and am going today and need to know exactly what to say.
it swells after all activity.
A cat scan or MRI of your ankle is in order, if you want a definate diagnosis. See an Orthopedic surgeon.
I don’t know how an ankle sprain is treated medically when it first happens, I wasn’t taken to the doctor when I sprained my ankle..
So more than ten years later when I gained some weight, it would swell up sometimes.. Mostly in the summer, when I need to wear shorts!!
It maybe even feels a bit unstable sometimes or like I pulled a muscle or something in it, when I land on it a bit hard on some occasions.. And it might feel a tiny numb tingle in it.. What is this?! What do I do..
Lately I’m carrying an extra 60 lbs since I quit smoking.. But besides the fact, what does it mean to have an ankle like that?
the dr never said or did much to explain this. i’ve been to him a couple of times about it. i’m tired of this being a mystery.
and I want to wear skirts and heels from time to time, without looking swollen!!
Ur surely having some ligament laxity in ur ankle, visit a orthopaedic surgeon for a second opinion..Reduce ur 60lbs…u need surgery if there is too much laxity in ur ankle..physiotherapy doesnt help much in 10 years old ligament laxity
I am pretty sure that I sprained my ankle a day or two ago and it hurts like crazy. When I move my foot around using my ankle, it hurts a lot. It is swelling quite a lot. When will the swelling stop? How can I reduce the swelling? What are some tips on treating the injury?
Umm personnaly i would set up and appointment with a doctor. Then just ice it and keep it elevated. Now do not put the ice on it without a towel over it cuz it will burn, MAKE SURE YOU SET UP AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DOCTOR FIRST.

So this morning i was going down the stairs to walk to school and i missed a step and fell down the last stair onto my left ankle and foot, and after a few minutes i was able to walk again and got to school, and i didn’t feel it swell or anything. Now i’m home (i came back for lunchtime) and i decided to stay home because it started to hurt really bad, when i tried to move it toward the side that hit the ground. And i just took off my sock and you know the little bump on the side of your ankle?? It’s all swollen and i think it may be bruised but i can’t turn my foot to make sure since it hurts. Should i call my dad?? What kind of injury is it? A sprain?? I was able to walk on it (it hurt sometimes, but still) all morning, but now it’s all swollen. How do i treat it??
Thank you!
In the medical community, there is a BIG difference in a "crack" sound on impact, or a "pop". If you heard a "pop", that probably means that you twisted, or at the most, sprained your ankle by landing on it sideways. A twisted ankle is just a stress in the muscles, where a sprained ankle is a pulled muscle that requires extensive care and pressure. At the most, though, a sprain will heal in approximately 2 1/2 weeks if you are careful, and maybe even sooner depending on the person. If you heard a crack, you have probably severed a bone in your ankle, which will lead to severe pain constantly, lack of feeling in your toes (which you don’t have), excessive swelling, and dizzyness. I would contact my physicial or pediatrician if I were you, just in case anything DID happen, and for the sake of documentation. Hope you get better soon, and thanks for ASKing.
A good hospital has a low count of people not paying their bills and low law suits. Private hospitals usually are operated this way. Private hospitals also have the right to refuse treatment to individuals if it is not a life threatening illness. A private hospital can refuse a patient for headaches, cold, sprained ankles, and other minor injuries (provided that the hospital has made sure the individual is in stable condition). The hospitals refuses the patient due to not having insurance. The individual wants to go to the private hospital cause of how well it treats its patients compared to the public hospitals. Public hospitals are not bad, but every place has one hospital that they prefer over another.
Well that is what GP’s are for. The rest of the world works that way. Why should valuable hospital staff be FORCED to see a person for a flipping headache when there is someone with chest pains needing assistance.
