HELP!!! How do I treat a sprained ankle?

June 21, 2010

So yesterday I went to gymnastics, I landed and I rolled my ankle and it hurts when I put pressure on it. How can I cure it quickly?

Standard care for a sprain = RICE

R-rest- The first 24-48 hours after the injury is considered a critical treatment period and activities need to be curtailed. Gradually use the injured extremity as much as tolerated, by try to avoid any activities that cause pain. Often using a splint, sling, or crutches is necessary to adequately rest the injured body part.

I-ice- For the first 48 hours post-injury, ice the sprain or strain 20 minutes at a time every 3-4 hours. The ice pack can be a bag of frozen vegetables (peas or corn), allowing you to be able to re-use the bag.

C-Compression- Use compression when elevating a sprain or strain in early treatment. Using an Ace bandage, wrap the area overlapping the elastic wrap by one-half of the width of the wrap. The wrap should be snug, but not cutting off circulation to the extremity. So, if your fingers or toes become cold, blue, or tingle, re-wrap!

E-elevate- Keep your sprain or strain as best possible–try to get it higher than your heart if possible. Elevate at night by placing pillows under your arm or leg.

Things to do with a sprained ankle….?

May 15, 2010

Hey guys…2 years ago I sprained my ankle and the doctor hardly did anything for it so it didn’t hral right. Wednesday I got a shot in my ankle re-injuring it so it could be treated right this time. It swelled up so I was told to just wrap it in an ace bandage till the swelling went down and come back monday to get fitted for an aircast stirrup. I go back to get fitted for it tomorrow ans my ankle still has a bit more swelling than it should, so I’m in bed elevating and icing it. What are some things I can do to keep me busy?? I’ve been reading for an hour already.
Oh and I have an iPod touch, cell phone, and tv in my room if that helps :)

Wow, that’s got to be b-o-r-i-n-g!

Have you tried crossword puzzles? Make a list of goals for the year, 5yrs. from now, what do you see yourself doing? Make plans for the summer, write in a diary, write letters, think of gifts for birthdays, holidays. If you have artistic ability, you could draw, with either black or colored pencils. Depending on your room set up, you could do some crafts.

After icing your ankle, close your eyes & place a warm cloth over them. Try to relax & concentrate on breathing as deeply & slowly as possible. This is a type of meditation. In thru your nose & blow out thru your mouth. You may go into a very shallow state of sleep; think of things you like, such as the ocean, sports, people, highlights of your life. It will calm you down & help you to rest so you can get through this.

Good luck!

how to treat a sprained ankle..? 10 points!?

April 17, 2010

I slipped a few days ago and twisted my ankle pretty bad. It got really swollen and bruised. I could still slightly walk (with a major limp) .I wrapped it in an ace bandage but now 3 days later my ankle is still very bruised, swollen and I can’t put any weight on it. I had to skip school today because I can’t even walk.. any suggestions on what I can do to help it heal? Should I get a brace? The pain is pretty bad.. I’ve had many sprained ankles but none like this..thanks!

You may need to be on crutches if you cannot put any weight on your ankle. The Ace bandage will help. Keep your foot elevated when you are sitting down and lying down in bed. Use ice three to four times a day for no more than 15 to 20 minutes to help reduce the swelling. Take Advil for any pain. If you keep putting weight on your ankle, it is not going to heal very quickly. You need to keep the weight off of the ankle for at least three weeks.

What is the best way to treat a "sprained ankle"?

March 30, 2010

HI,
I sprained my ankle last Sunday playing soccer, and I tried to go play again yesterday but I couldn’t my ankle still hurts from when I twist or turn.

My ankle is "not" swollen, I can walk without limping, I can even run straight but when I make sudden turns, or move my ankle to some direction it sill hurts. Its taking a lot to heal, I really want to go back to playing soccer, my spring break starts today.

Can someone please recommend me good treatments for my ankle? are there any medicine to put on the ankle that will speed up the healing process, or is there anything out there which can help speed up the recovery?

Thank you all so much,
warm regards

-Bobby
See I don’t need a doctor it is not serious, my mother is a doctor she can tell if its fractured or not. But I still can’t play because I feel slight pain when kicking the ball.

I thought there is some cream or something that can help me recover 100%, and fast.

Well, Bobby…
It sound like it has healed wrong. Did you go to the doctor right away on the Sunday you sprained it? If not, go now. If you did,you should go back. Wrap it up good and tight, but not too tight, whenever walking or running. Keep ice on it when it is not wrapped. Make sure to keep pressure off f it as much as possible.
The most important thing is to see a doctor. if it healed wrong they may be able to fix t right away, or give you a splint/ brace to help it back in place. it you did not go to the doctor before, then it could have been a slight fracture and began healing wrong. it is hard to tell without an X-ray.
Best of luck to you bobby. Enjoy your spring break!

Do you really need to ice a sprained ankle?

March 07, 2010

Today I roled my ankle playing basketball. I didn’t ice it and my job requires me to be on my feet all day. If I can just put up with the pain is it ok not to take a break and treat the sprain? I figure that if I just dont push it to hard it will get better over time. Is this correct?

.yes if it hurts.

Is my ankle sprained or fractured? If not treated can it become worse?

February 27, 2010

I think I sprained my ankle in basketball today but I am not positive. Whenever I walk it hurts but I am still able to walk. When I put pressure on the ankle it has pain and when I walk on soft surfaces, such as a mattress it hurts because my ankle is not in a straight position. My leg is swelled up and is tender and hurts when touched. I can not bend my foot to the side or back. Is it a sprained ankle I have? Also, if I do not treat my ankle and keep walking on it, will it get worse? And can a fracture occur from that?

I don’t think your ankle is broken. If it were broken, I doubt very seriously you’d be able to stand on it for very long, let alone walk on it. I had a broken pinkie toe once and I thought I was going to die. I could walk on my foot, but not without extreme pain for a week, and that’s just a pinkie toe, so imagine what it would be for your ankle that supports a great deal of your body weight.

You want to stay off your ankle as much as you can. You should ice it to bring the swelling down. Some people get ace bandages to wrap their ankles in, but I don’t think that’s necessary. You don’t want to restrict any blood flow to the injury because it’s the blood cells that are going to speed heeling.

If your pain gets worse over the next couple of days, have it x-rayed. You could have a slight hairline fracture, but again, I would bet that it is not a break because you can at least walk on it.

Oh, sorry. Forgot to answer the other part of your question. As far as getting worse? If the ankle is sprained, a break due to the sprain is very, very unlikely. If you did have a fracture, not having your foot set *could* cause you all kinds of problems in the future, including a malformation of your foot as the bone heals without being set in place, and of course, the eventual arthritis that comes with it.

Like I said, if after close of play tomorrow your ankle is still really bothering you, have it x-rayed. Better to be safe than sorry.

How do you treat a badly sprained ankle, because of playing basketball. I have big swell on my left foot.?

February 25, 2010

elevate the leg above your heart to keep the swelling down. Apply ice for the first twenty four to forty-eight hours off and on. wrap the foot and ankle with an ace bandage to help keep the swelling down just don’t wrap it too tight. Get a pair of crutches to help get around. If it hurts to walk on then you shouldn’t walk on it. Putting your weight on it will only make it swell more. Get an Aircast ankle brace and wear that for the next six to eight weeks. It prevents you from twisting your ankle again while it’s trying to heal. If you have a boot then put that on it will act like a cast and help quiet the injury better and give it enough support.

Ligaments are like tendons and they are comprised of fibrous connective tissue and take six to eight weeks to heal. The critical part is the first two weeks of injury when it has the best chance of healing. It’s sorta like gluing two pieces of glass together and the glue wont take if you muck with it while it’s starting to set. Let the ligaments heal and no basketball for at least a month. In the meantime get an Aircast ankle brace or something that prevents you from rolling your ankle. If you allow the ligaments to heal then you will decrease your chances of having a recurrent ankle injury.
