I sprained my ankle this morning, and it is very painful, is there anything i should be doing to help my ankle?

This morning my left foot was twisted on its side inwards causing me to fall over, straight away it hurt.
I had to walk to school and my ankle didnt feel too bad, however once i got there, sat down for 10 minutes and then tried to walk, my ankle felt so much more painful!
After one lesson i was sent home because it hurt too much to put weight on my foot

Ive not been to the doctors, a first aid treated adult had a look at school and said they think it has been sprained.
Is there anything i should be doing for my ankle? I cant move it left or right without it being very painful
and walk up steps or on flat ground really hurts.
Once i get walking for a while its bearable, because the pain keeps going from worse to settled back to worse.

Its throbbing when i dont even move it at the minute
i cant get up to accident and emergency so is there anything i can do to help my ankle?
do i deffinatly need a foot bandage or anything of that sort?

thanks (im 18)

You can wrap it up with an ace bandage around the bottom of your foot and ankle in a figure 8 fashion, but not too tight. Try to stay off of it as much as possible and keep it elevated on a pillow or 2. If it is a sprain, it should slowly get better. You can take an anti-inflammatory for pain like Ibuprofen.

Main thing is strap it to give it support and keep off it. While resting it keep it elevated.

YOu can rest it ,, ice ,, when u put the ice on dont just wrest it on your foot push down on it so it feels like your foot goes a bit numb after a while from the cold .. and elevate it to keep the swelling down ,, when you have to start walking again a strap helps because it takes some of the pressure of your foot .. hope i helped and that it feels better soon =]

    For a sprain, remember RICE:
    Rest
    Ice
    Compression
    Elevation.
If the swelling does not go down you should see a doctor.

Try not to put pressure on the sprain. Elevate it above your heart if possible, it will keep down the swelling. Did you scream when it happened? If you did it’s fractured.

You can do everything everyone else suggested and "hope" it gets better or you can fix it. It starts with focused relaxation which will reduce swelling way faster than ice.
